Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Required Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Experience with peritoneal dialysis preferred Description: The unit consists of 52 beds, all private rooms. BLS certification is required. NIHSS certification is required. Some staff have ACLS certification, which is a plus. Patient ratios are 1:6-7, mostly 1:7 for both day and night shifts. Charge Nurse takes a full patient assignment and has a Clinical Assistant. The Clinical Assistant works 40 hours a week, spending half the time on the floor with patients and the other half in the office. There are usually 4-6 Certified Nursing Assistants per shift, with ratios of 1:10-12. Staff is required to work every other weekend, with three weekends out of a six-week schedule. Holidays are rotated within the schedule. Scrub color is navy blue for registered nurses and grey for nursing assistants. Remote telemetry is monitored as needed on a different unit. Registered Nurses are not required to read strips but may do so if experienced. Common drips include heparin and very rare lasix, with different patient-controlled analgesia. Bipap, Cpap, and high flow are the ventilatory support used, with hospitalists and intensivists in-house 24/7. An IV team and PICC team are available 24/7. Registered Nurses assess their patients' IV sites but do not start their own IVs; the IV team handles all starts. Respiratory therapy and pharmacy services are available 24/7. The shifts run from 0645-1915 and 1845-0715. Staff can submit up to six requests off per six-week schedule. Floating to other medical units may occur, though orientation typically focuses on the specific floor. Common diagnoses include all ortho post-ops, neuro post-ops, and other general post-ops, along with various medical conditions. Patients being tested for COVID may remain on the unit until results are available. Charting system used is Allscripts. Experience with peritoneal dialysis is highly preferred.
