experience Description: Unit has a 50-bed capacity.
Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:5-7 on days and 1:6-8 on nights.
Required certifications include BLS and a valid RN License.
Candidates can take a PCT class to become a PCT or have a CNA
certification. Common patient diagnoses include pneumonia, UTI,
altered mental status, GI bleed, alcohol withdrawal, and
falls/weakness. Experience in titrating drips is needed, with
exceptions noted for cardiac drip titration. Common titratable and
set rate drips include heparin, bumetanide, and furosemide. There
is a charge nurse on each shift who may take patient assignments
based on staffing. The unit employs nurse aids/patient care techs,
with an average ratio of 1:10-12. Job duties include taking vitals,
performing blood glucose monitoring, EKGs, applying heart monitors,
assisting with bathing, feeding, toileting, and positioning
patients. Respiratory therapy administers breathing treatments and
manages respiratory equipment; nurses are typically responsible for
monitoring this equipment. There are tele-monitor techs who oversee
the telemetry, and nurses are not expected to interpret telemetry
strips. Shifts for RNs are 7 PM to 7 AM, with no self-scheduling or
block scheduling available. Travelers are expected to be flexible
with scheduling. Every other weekend and holiday rotation may be
required. There is no on-call or standby requirement. Floating may
occur to other medical/surgical or intermediate care units based on
patient needs. Registered Nurses are required to wear navy blue
scrubs. The charting system used is from Cerner Corporation. A
bachelor’s degree in nursing is not required for this position. 5
